Investigating 3D shapes

Today we worked in groups to investigate the properties of 3D shapes. We learned all about faces, edges and vertices. We will apply our knowledge of 3D shapes to our science unit of structures and materials in the following weeks.

The Sydney Opera House

Today we made replicas of the Sydney Opera House. The Opera House's sails can light up for special events. We made our replicas out of cardboard and paper. The real-life Opera House is made out of metal and stone. We learned that it is important for a structure to have a strong base or foundation! The original models were made out of steel pipes. We learned that it took over 150 hours just to design the plans (or blueprints) for the Opera House. We had a great time with this activity!

Our ipads have arrived!

Today we got to finally use the ipads! First, we had to learn about the ipad rules in the classroom. We have them posted, just in case we forget. The most important rule is to handle the ipads safely, carefully and respectfully. We also talked about how it is important to make sure that we stay on-task and "on-app" when working with ipads. We also know that it's important to leave the apps and settings to the teacher. We must remember to share and ensure that everyone can see!
Stay posted to see our first creations using "SMILEBOX!" ---coming soon ---

Happy New Year!

Today we had an amazing start to 2014 in Room 14! We were excited to go back to school! Some of us were a little tired, but that's okay! We got through it!
For our morning mystery, we shared a bit of what we did over the winter break.
This morning we did a little bit of writing as well. We planned out our winter break writing by using a spider web organizer to sort out our ideas!
This afternoon we made our pirate hats for our new theme study. Our new theme is: Pirates! Sailing Around The World! We are super excited and overjoyed! Ms. Nevieri told us we will be studying lots of different countries including: Australia, Tibet, Polynesia, China, France, Italy and much more!

Tomorrow is early dismissal!
